HOCKEY STARS AND THE SUN SHINE AT CRIME STOPPERS GOLF TOURNAMENT

Popular local fundraiser raises $25,000.00 for Grey Bruce Program

The weatherman cooperated, the hockey stars were out, and an enthusiastic 164 golfers helped contribute to the enormous success at the 25th Anniversary Crime Stoppers of Grey Bruce Golf Tournament.

This year’s event took place at the Southampton Golf & Country Club on June 1, 2017. The event raised $25,000.00, which funds approximately 25% of Crime Stoppers annual budget. Trillium Mutual Insurance and Waterloo Brewing Company have been instrumental in the success of the tournament from the beginning.  They work hand in hand with the board of directors of Crime Stoppers and Southampton Golf & Country Club to ensure this #1 fundraiser is a well-organized and successful event.  Many Businesses have stepped forward and sponsored all 18 holes and contributed this year with an impressive array of prizes.

Program Chair Elizabeth Egerdeen said “the success of our golf tournament is a testament to the commitment of our community who want to make our twin counties a safer place to live."

One of the reasons the tournament is so popular is the ability of its organizers to attract big name hockey stars to participate. Tournament alumni have included, Bobby Hull, Eddie Shack, Pat Hickey and Chris Neil.

This year’s tournament featured three legends from the Toronto Maple Leafs - Wendel Clark and former team-mates Billy Derlago and Tom Fergus.

For the past 30 years Crime Stoppers has been “community policing” in its purest form. The Crime Stoppers Anonymous Tip Line allows the public to be “part of the solution” to crime in our communities. Statistics illustrate the success of the program as they have exceeded $51.9 Million in total seized narcotics and stolen property, and have received over 13,800 tips since the program’s inception in 1987.
